  • 1 cup milk (room temperature)
  • 1/2 cup sour cream (room temperature)
  • 1 cup butter (room temperature)
  • 1/2 cup shortening (Crisco)
  • 6 cups sifted powdered sugar
  • 1/4 cup milk
  • 1 tablespoon vanilla

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (177°C) and prepare three 6-inch cake pans by buttering, flouring, and lining them with parchment paper.
  2. In a medium bowl, whisk together the cake flour, salt, baking powder, and baking soda; set aside.
  3. In a small bowl, mix the milk, sour cream, and vanilla; set aside.
  4. Cream the butter and sugar together using a mixer until smooth. Gradually add whisked egg whites until combined.
  5. Alternate adding the dry ingredients and milk mixture to the creamed butter until just combined.
  6. Pour batter into prepared pans and bake for 30-35 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean.
  7. Allow cakes to cool for 15-20 minutes before removing from pans.
